Joe Klause, Trumpet

Joe Klause holds degrees from the New England Conservatory and the Longy School of Music, with training at Juilliard’s Pre-College Program.

He is an adjunct faculty member at Reed College, Clackamas Community College, Lewis and Clark College, and the University of Portland.

Joe is a member of the Portland Opera, Rose City Brass Quintet, and Rose City Brass Trio. He is acting second trumpet/associate principal with the Hawai’i Symphony for the 2024-25 season, and also performs regularly with the Pacific Northwest Ballet, Oregon Symphony, Auburn Symphony, Portland Chamber Orchestra, and Orchestra Next.

When not performing, Joe enjoys being in the great outdoors of the PNW, playing with his cats, and working as a software engineer.

 

Susan Smith, Piano

A native of Portland, Oregon, pianist Susan DeWitt Smith has an active career as a soloist and chamber musician. She has performed with the Oregon Symphony, Portland’s Columbia Symphony, and on subscription series with the San Diego Symphony, San Diego Chamber Orchestra, Palomar Symphony and the Dartmouth Symphony. Dr. Smith is highly regarded as a chamber musician and has appeared as a guest artist at festivals throughout the country, including the Lake Chelan Bach Festival, Bloch, Cascade Head and the Cascade music festivals in Oregon, as well as the Grand Teton, Hot Springs and Olympic music festivals. A graduate of Dartmouth College, she earned her MM from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Eastman School of Music. Dr Smith is an Associate Professor of Music, head of the piano program and Chair of the Music Department at Lewis and Clark College. She has recorded extensively on the KOCH International Classics label.
